Elections are held so that people can have people that drive their agenda in the government. By people turning up to vote for a certain candidate, they believe that their candidate is the best to take the country forward. Similarly, people turn up to vote because they may not like how the government is being run and want a change. In the United States, for example, there are two major political parties, the Democrats, and the Republicans. People have viewed that if a voter does not belong to either of the political parties, then they do not know how to vote and thus are deemed to be spoiling their votes. However, some voters prefer third-party candidates even though they know they are unlikely to win because they require change and feel that the two major political parties do not represent their views.
More independent voter believes that are not committed to one political party. In most countries, there are two dominant political parties that exist. One of the parties usually forms the government while the other is in the opposition. Both parties have a huge following from the people because they believe that they represent their views. However, some independent voters believe that politics is not about the most dominant parties but about what each candidate represents. They believe that each of the candidates should be evaluated by what they stand for and what they will bring to the voters if elected (Disch, 2002). They also look for a candidate that will drive their agenda through the policies they will come up with that will improve things like the economy, infrastructure among others.
Young voters have a tendency of voting for third party candidates because they have not voted for long. Young people believe that it is unnecessary to vote for one particular political party. In addition, young voters have a tendency of thinking that the main political parties have not offered enough and therefore want to try new individuals in the name of third party candidates (Salit, 2014). In spite of their parents having a stand on which political party they support, their children who are of the voting age believe that the there is a changing trend in terms of the voting patterns and will vote for third candidates instead.
The political process tends to disenfranchise some voters, and therefore they tend to vote for third party candidates. Some people feel that the main political parties are not fair in the way they conduct their affairs and therefore dissociate from voting for their candidates. Furthermore, the process of choosing a candidate in this major parties is not fair and transparent, and therefore the rational thinking voters believe it is wrong to vote for them (Green, 2010). On the other hand, they believe that third party candidates are honest and their parties are run with fairness in terms of the handling of the issues in their parties.
Most voters who vote for third party candidates genuinely love the individual and their political views. Some candidates are loved by the people, but they do not get a chance to vie with the major political parties, therefore, they go to smaller parties, and this makes them be on the ballot. The candidates believe that they have people that support them but will not have a chance on the ballot if they went to were in the major parties (Sifry, 2013). Furthermore, some voters vote for third party candidates because they hate the two main political parties. To make sure that they spoil the votes of any of the candidate and express their dissatisfaction at the two main political parties, they tend to vote for other candidates.
Some people believe that the two party system has led to the decline in the morality of a country. Even though political leaders come from the two political parties with a few coming from minority parties, some people tend to believe that these people are not always honest and their morals are put into question. As some parents feel that they want to teach their children how to be honest and moral, they vote for candidates that are good role models for their children. As people politics tends to bring divisions among people, some parents believe that voting for third party candidates will send a message to their children that they should make a wise decision while voting.
Overall, voters have many reasons for voting for candidates that have no chance of winning an election. After all, people make their own choices with regard to the person they vote to the office. Even though most people vote for a person that they believe has a good chance of winning an election, some have their own beliefs with regard to the morality and ethics of an individual they are voting for. Furthermore, young voters tend to vote for third party candidates because they want to change and do not believe that the old guard does not represent their views.
