The Attorney General, D. Harris made an announcement that the 23-Year-Old George Samwell Bronk from the Citrus Height had been given a four-year jail term on Friday. The convict was sentenced to the four years in prison for the crime of stalking a woman on Facebook. The victim had been stalking women in the social media and other networks. Mr. Bronk pleaded that he was guilty at the Sacramento Supreme court. Mr. Bronk had committed seven felonies such as the intrusion of the computer, giving a false impersonation as well-being in possession of child pornography. Because of these, Mr. Bronk was sentenced to four years and eight months in the state prison. He will also have to be registered as the sex offender. Since the internet offers several forms of convenience to the users, it has led to the most recent frontier of crime cases. Bronk is a cyber predator. The attorney general quoted that such criminal activities have to be dealt with the most appropriate manner to act as an example for those who use other people’s identities over the internet and social media.
Between the years 2009 through to 2010, Bronk had gotten access to the various email accounts as well as the various Facebook pages of different people. This occurred in the 17 states and some of the residents who were in England. Brook had used a Trojan to find the answers to the email security question of women. This was from the information that Bronk got from Facebook.
Initially, Bronk had searched the sent mail folder that belonged to the victim and found the nude photos and videos. He then sent the videos to the address book of the victim. Similarly, he gained access to the Facebook account of the victim. He did this by clicking the link of the forgotten password. “Forgot Your Password” link asked for the reset of the new password. The link to reset the password was sent to the email of the victim. In several instances, he was posting the photographs of the victim on the Facebook page and the internet. Also, using this Facebook account, he made comments on the Facebook pages of friends of the victim. The superior judge, Mr. Brown had no option but to reject any form of defense or probation, and thereby sentencing Broke to the state prison. The sentence was for the crime of intrusion of computers as well as the false impersonation. In addition to the crimes, the judge added the consecutive term of 8 months for being in possession of the child pornography. In the hard drive of Bronk’s computer, there were over 170 files that contained photographs of naked women including several actresses. All of them had their Facebook accounts accessed by the victim. The victims described the case as a virtual rape.
In conclusion, fraud and the identity theft are some of the challenges that are facing the computer and internet users. The instant access to the internet to get online purchases and other forms of online transactions; it is, therefore, crucial for everyone to take the various steps in protecting themselves and ensure that they do not fall victims of such issues. The users must know how to protect their identity and privacy. Also, the fact that this is an area that is new to the law enforcers as well as the victims, it becomes crucial for the victims to understand it. The case of Bronk is an example of what the fraudster is capable of on the internet.
