Hedonistic Utilitarian Essay

The entire concept of utilitarianism describes approaches to justice whereby the first approach talks about the necessity that ethics has on its consequences. Conversely, another approach dictates that repercussions should not be the only point of reference when thinking about morals. This concept of justice analysis heightens countless scopes of thinking in case one encounters a critical situation that distresses life. According to the definition given by the Greeks Hedonism gives an implication of several related theories concerning what is good for human beings and how human beings ought to be behaving and the motivation that people tend to have concerning a specific behavior (Tonnsjo 445). All theories that explain hedonism give a critical explanation of pleasure and pain as well as other important elements described by these two elements. According to the arguments of different scholars across the globe, they note that in any case hedonism theories were never important in reasoning then  they might have been forgotten long time ago (Tonnsjo 445). However, this is contrary to what is evident in the present society because these theories seem to be gaining dominance each passing day and many people apply them to justify their actions that have been realistic in even many courts of laws in the world. 

In line with the case presented about the terrorist whose plan is to cause pain on human beings, an action that is against the utilitarian theory, performance of any activity that will allow the security officers in discovering the bomb would be the choice that any person can approve. Hedonism utilitarian focuses much on value and well-being. Scholars describe the ideology of well-being as the good life for the one living it. Thus, hedonism theories outline that pleasure is value while pain is invaluable (Whitten, Hightower & Sayeed 50).  People who believe in this theory define pleasure in both physical and mental concepts. For example, any activity that can affect the pleasure of a person either mental or physically can be seen to be against the theory, hence their best option would be to participate in all the things that aims at creating pleasure to people and limiting instances of displeasure. A simplest illustration that gives the definition of pleasure to hedonism utilitarian is that when an individual goes into an SPA for massage services, he or she is bound to gentle massage that will make him or her relaxed. This in itself is a cause of pleasure that the theory would be advocating for as it brings happiness to an individual (Whitten, Hightower &Sayeed 49). However, stubbing the toe of a person or hearing the death of loved one is bound to cause displeasure on a person thus those are some of the negative things that have a great impact on hedonism theory.

The question that has been raising more concern among many people entails the failure of the utilitarian concept to respect individual rights of people. This happens in such a way the concept only care about the extent of satisfaction while an individual’s satisfaction becomes the opportunity cost. In libertarianism concept, question that is worth discussing is how one can identify to what extent the current distribution of activities is bound to affect the value and pleasure that a person ought to be having in his life. According to the arguments of Stock Oliveira, and Hippel (392), rights of every person is of much worth and ought to be coming first amidst any reasoning. However, there are certain circumstances that the legal officers or the security team has the responsibility of infringing the rights of few citizens to save the lives of many people. The Hedonism theory talk’s about the value and life in itself is something of worth to every person. This implies that if one bears the task of coming up with a decision of choosing between saving the life of one person and killing many then that would be against the obligations stated in the hedonism theory. The theory expects that one understand the concept of value of life by saving many lives compared to the lives that might be lost in case of an attack. 

The question presented about the terrorist who has implanted a bomb that is to consume lives of many people is a critical question that ought to be approached with a high level of keenness. Assaulting the daughter of the terrorist to inflict pain on the terrorists to say where they he might have implanted the bomb would also be acting against the dictates of hedonism theory. However, one would use the concept of value in finding the best decision when faced with such critical situation. The lives of people who will be consumed by the planted bomb would be high compared to the assault that will be done of the daughter to save the lives of people who would die from the bomb. Thus, I would concur with the argument that assaulting the daughter that would force the terrorist to say there the bomb might have been planted would be saving lives of the many people. Besides, the trained security officer will not assault the daughter to an extent that she might lose her life but they would stage manage it to an extent that less pain is inflicted in the daughter to agitate his father to save lives of thousands. In essence, I agree with the decision of torturing the daughter to compel the father to save lives of innocent lives.
