Animal testing essay sample

There has been raging debate on the subject of using animals as research objects for years. This animal testing essay looks at why using animals in clinical and product safety research is utter cruelty and why it should be stopped.

It is estimated that 60% of the animals that are used in research testing are for product safety and biomedical research testing. We all have different views concerning animals – some think fondly of them and wouldn’t want any harm to come their way while others have no problem harming them in the name of research. Whichever side of the divide you fall, it is a fact that animals are exploited by research firms across the globe. It is true that we benefit a great deal from the animal tests but should that warrant us to subject innocent animals to that kind of torture?

Animals, just like humans, have rights too. They should be treated with respect rather than being violated and killed in a gruesome way. It is wrong to view animals as our experimentation tools. We have more in common with animals than you think – animals can also see, think, and feel.  Using animals in medical research clearly violates their basic rights and it is not fair to subject them to something that no human would be subjected to.

Animals have a right to choose. Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to converse with animals to explain the choice they have before subject them to trails. When humans take part in criminal trails, all the risks are clearly explained to them and they are allowed to make a conscious decision on whether they would want to participate anyway. However, animals are picked without choice and subjected to trails that almost always leave them maimed or dead.

From a moral point of view, there is just no justification for harming animals in the name of advancing science. Most researchers argue that the benefits of testing using animals is it helps the researchers to only test the products on humans after ensuring it is not risky. It is true and very important that human trials should only be done after total safety has been guaranteed but the bone of contention is how this safety should be tested. It is morally wrong to subject an animal that has no way of choosing to something that is gruesome.

We cannot also ignore the pain that animals have to endure when undergoing these tests. It is important to note that animals feel pain just as much as we do. In fact, when subjected to pain, they respond almost the same way we do e.g. screaming and crying. A good example of such a test is the draize tests, which are typically performed on rabbits. In these tests, a poisonous substance is introduced in the eyes of the rabbit and then the researchers observe the cornea to see how the tissue in and around the eye will be affected by the substance. This is an extremely pain process that results in blindness and eventual death. Even though these tests have significantly gone down over time, they are still used here and there.

Finally, it is not true that the only way to guarantee the safety of products is to use animals to test them. There are companies which have already stopped this cruelty and are still producing 100% safe products for humans. One way of doing this is using natural substances as the raw materials for products being developed. If natural raw materials that are known to have no harmful effects are used, the chances of the product causing any harm are very slim. It is also possible to use synthetic cells that are an exact replica of the human cells for tests instead of subjecting animals to wanton pain and eventual death.
